Leather care: Baby Blue

Leather Type: chrome-tanned and synthetically retanned. The leather features a corrected grain finish with pigments and a tumbled surface that creates a natural-looking embossed texture.

Feel and Aging: This leather has a smooth finish and a structured feel when new. With regular use, it gradually softens, becomes more flexible, and begins to mold to its shape. Like a good pair of leather boots, it develops character over time.

When to Condition: I don't recommend conditioning the baby blue leather. Because its surface is finished with pigments, applying oils, waxes, or creams can affect the finish and potentially cause the color to wear off or change.

Instead, stick to simple surface cleaning with a damp cloth and water, only when needed. There's no need to condition this leather as you would our other leathers.

How Can I Tell When It Needs Conditioning:  Unlike our other leathers, the baby blue leather has a pigmented finish that covers the surface. This means you won't necessarily see the same signs of dryness or dullness that you might see with unfinished or differently finished leathers. Rather than conditioning it, focus on keeping the surface clean and avoiding products that could affect its finish.

What Products Do I Recommend?

None! Just water.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Clean your leather

When your bag needs cleaning, use a clean, slightly damp cloth with water to gently wipe the surface.

Avoid using soap or other cleaning products, as they may affect the pigmented finish. There’s no need to scrub the leather. Simply wipe away any dirt from the surface.

I recommend using microfiber or another cloth that won’t leave lint behind. My go-to is blue shop towels, which I find work really well for this.

A note on cleaning: Never soak your bag in water. Always clean it using a damp cloth, and avoid saturating the leather.

And that’s it! Unlike our other leathers, the baby blue leather doesn’t need oils, waxes, or creams. Because it has a pigmented finish, keeping the care routine simple is the best way to maintain its appearance.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

If your piece has metal eyelets or studs, make sure you don’t leave water or conditioner sitting in or around them. Moisture trapped around metal hardware can lead to rust or corrosion over time.

DISCLAIMER: There are many ways to condition leather and plenty of products to choose from. This is the method I’ve found works best for the specific leathers I use at Yomahra. Every leather is different, so results may vary depending on the leather type and finish.
